Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 23) — Motorists have until Nov. 30 to shift to RFID as expressways operated by San Miguel Corporation (SMC) shift to cashless transactions by Nov. 2.
The tollways include the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), the Skyway System, NAIA Expressway, and the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX).
According to a statement by the SMC on Friday, the surge in the number of motorists rushing to convert to the Autosweep RFID system resulted in the extension of the issuance of the free RFID stickers.
The SMC added that vehicles without RFID from Nov. 2 to 30 will still be allowed to enter the tollways, but stressed that Nov. 30 will be the “absolute deadline.”
“By Nov. 2, all lanes at our toll plazas will be fully capable and converted to electronic toll collection, in full compliance with the government’s mandate,” the company said.
“However, after careful study and deliberation, and especially in consideration of so many motorists who have not been able to secure an Autosweep RFID account because of the volume of applications we have today, we have decided to extend the deadline to Nov. 30,” it also said.
Motorists who will not abide will also be apprehended and issued a citation ticket.
