Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 20) —The entire 18-kilometer Skyway Stage 3 will be toll-free for motorists for a whole month, in line with its soft opening this December, San Miguel Corporation announced on Tuesday.

“We are confident that we can soft-open Skyway 3 by December 2020 and we will open it to the public for free for one month so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of this long-awaited-mega project,” SMC president and chief operating officer Ramon Ang said in a statement.

The newly-completed project, which cuts travel from SLEX to NLEX from three hours to 20 minutes, is seen to improve traffic conditions in and around Metro Manila.

“We’re very proud and excited about this project, because it will truly make a big difference to so many people’s lives–especially with our economy slowly opening up and with more vehicles coming back to our roads,” Ang said.

He added: “We have all waited long for this project, so this is the best way we can welcome everyone, by making Skyway 3 free for one month.”

The project, which took a total of six years to complete due to numerous challenges, including right-of-way issues and major changes to its design and alignment, will also serve as an alternative to EDSA, with its eight access points that traverse Makati, Manila, San Juan, and Quezon City.

These access points include Buendia, Plaza Dilao, Nagtahan, Aurora Blvd., Quezon Ave., Sgt. Rivera, Balintawak, and NLEX.

Ang clarified that Skyway 3, privately funded and built by SMC, was completed at no cost to government, with also no guarantees or subsidies.
