Govt extends travel restrictions on 10 countries until Sept. 5

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 31) — President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the extension of travel restrictions on ten countries until Sept. 5, his spokesman announced on Tuesday.

The restrictions on incoming passengers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia were supposed to lapse on Aug. 31 but was extended until Sunday, Sept. 5.

The travel ban is part of the government’s response to check the rising number of COVID-19 cases, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.

The country’s COVID-19 case total reached 1,989,857 on Tuesday, with 145,562 active cases or currently ill patients. The death toll jumped to 33,448 while a total of 1,810,847 persons have recovered.

On Monday, the Department of Health logged the highest single-day tally of cases with over 22,000 new infections.
