Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 28) — First alarm was again raised over Marikina River after its water level rose to over 15 meters due to incessant monsoon rains.

The river’s water level was reported to be at 15.5 meters as of 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

The first alarm, which means “warning” in the city’s alarm system for the river, was last hoisted on Sunday. Alert Level 2 (meaning “prepare”) was briefly up on Saturday as the rainy weather persisted.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration warned residents near Marikina River, Tullahan River and Pasig River that monsoon rains may spawn flooding on Wednesday.

Southwest monsoon will continue to drench the country in the coming days, PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said in a briefing.

He added that a low-pressure area may form east of Luzon.

There has been no let-up in monsoon rains in Metro Manila and other parts of the country since last week, even causing flooding in many areas.
