Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 12) — Taal Volcano continued to show magmatic unrest as 185 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Monday.
In its 8:00 am bulletin, Philvocs said they observed on Sunday seven low-frequency volcanic earthquakes,176 volcanic tremors having durations of one to 16 minutes, and low-level background tremors.
Low-level background tremor has persisted since July 7, it added.
State seismologists also said high levels of volcanic sulfur dioxide averaging 6,421 tons per day had been observed. They also witnessed steam-rich plumes as high as 1,500 meters from Taal Volcano’s main crater.
Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, which means the “magma extruding from the main crater could drive explosive eruption,” Philvocs said.
Entry into the Taal Volcano Island is prohibited as it is now considered a permanent danger zone. The public is also barred from entering the high-risk barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel.
“All activities on Taal Lake should not be allowed at this time,” Phivolcs said.
