Palace: Expect Pfizer vaccine purchases for teens

San Juan City only needs to administer second doses to nearly 4,000 more people to reach herd immunity against COVID-19, Mayor Francis Zamora told CNN Philippines on Friday. (FILE PHOTO)

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 27) — The country is expected to procure more doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents, Malacañang said Thursday.

Dahil ‘yan lang naman po ang bakuna na pupwede sa teenagers, asahan po natin na bibili tayo ng mas maraming Pfizer (doses) para sa mga teenagers,” said Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Monday.

The Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that it will be allowing young people aged 12 to 15 to use the American drug maker’s vaccine, amending the emergency use authorization it granted Pfizer in January. To date, only people aged 16 and up may receive Pfizer doses.

US authorities approved the usage of Pfizer for ages 12 to 15.

Roque said only procured Pfizer doses will be administered to the age group as current supply came from the World Health Organization-led COVAX facility allotted for the poor.

The Philippines is currently inoculating health workers, the elderly, and individuals with comorbidities against the highly contagious disease.
