Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 5) – New York-based speed skater Julian Macaraeg is the lone Filipino who will compete in the 2021 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships starting today in Dordrecht, Netherlands.
The 17-year-old short track speed skater is also one of only two athletes from tropical countries who will be competing in the world championships, alongside Akash Aradhya of India.
Macaraeg made his mark in the Philippine sports scene in January 2020 as the first Filipino speed skater to compete in the Winter Youth Olympics, where he had a quarterfinal finish in the boys’ 500-meter event and a semifinalist in the mixed-National Olympic Committee team relay event.
He was also one of the two Filipino athletes entered in the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics, along with alpine skier Ana Wahleithner.
Macaraeg has competed in several events in the world junior championships for the past three years.
