Pope Francis names Cardinal Jose Advincula as new Manila archbishop

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 25) — Pope Francis appointed on Thursday Cardinal Jose Advincula as the new Archbishop of Manila, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines announced.

The CBCP said this was made public at noontime in Rome, or at 7 p.m. Manila time.

The 68-year-old Advincula, a former Capiz archbishop, succeeds Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who left the seat in February 2020 to assume his new Vatican post as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Following the vacancy, Bishop Broderick Pabillo was designated as Apostolic Administrator of the Manila archdiocese.

In October last year, Advincula was named as the country’s ninth cardinal by the Pope.
