Duterte wants police stations, military camps used as COVID-19 vaccination sites in rural areas

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 8) — President Rodrigo Duterte wants police stations and military camps used as COVID-19 vaccination sites in far-flung areas.

Duterte said these sites should be utilized if there are no other suitable venues for vaccination activities in rural areas.

The President also instructed the police and military to be deployed to vaccination sites in provinces to ensure peace and order during the vaccination drive.

“Fundamentally, it is really giving people shots that would make them healthy,” Duterte said during the weekly Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases meeting.

Galvez Jr. said military hospitals will also be used as COVID-19 vaccination centers for the immunization of health workers, soldiers, and their families.

“Aside from school buildings, military camps are best set to have an orderly vaccination,” Galvez said.

Duterte reiterated a previous government directive that public schools must be used as vaccination facilities in urban areas.

The President added if the public schools are not conducive inoculation sites, LGU officials can use gymnasiums in their localities instead.

Galvez assured the President that many of local government units in the country are now prepared for vaccination efforts.

“The DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government), through a memo, directed them (LGUs) to have a simulation or rehearsal for inoculation nationwide,” Galvez said.

The government has been in talks with several pharmaceutical firms as it targets to vaccinate 50 million to 70 million Filipinos this year.
