1 dead, 33 hospitalized in diarrhea outbreak in Davao Occidental town — DOH

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 3) — An outbreak of diarrhea left one dead and dozens of people hospitalized in the municipality of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

In a statement, Department of Health Davao Center for Health Development confirmed reports of diarrheal cases in Barangay Butuan, adding that the information was confirmed by town Mayor Jason John Joyce.

It said 34 patients have been admitted to the Tomas Lachica District Hospital so far.

“Among these admitted patients, one unfortunately died and is still subject for further investigation as to the cause of death,” it added.

Meanwhile, 25 individuals are being closely monitored in the community.

Municipal health officer Dr. Amparo Lachica said the probable source of infection was through contaminated water.

The DOH office said a team from the regional epidemiology surveillance unit will be dispatched to the barangay to acquire necessary specimens and proceed with the investigation.

The regional office likewise said it has provided essentials like medicines and intravenous fluids to the hospital, along with jerry cans for water storage and chlorine granules for Barangay Butuan residents.

The statement added that Mayor Joyce has assured them that “everything is under control.”
