Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 8) – Gilas Pilipinas Men program director Chot Reyes will again assume the head coaching duties for the national basketball team in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup set next week.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas made the announcement on Friday.
Serbian coach Nenad Vucinic, who made his official Gilas coaching debut in the last first round games of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers, will serve as one of Reyes’ assistant coaches.
Vucinic will be joined by veteran mentor Jong Uichico and Sandro Soriano in the sidelines.
The reappointment of Reyes as Gilas head coach came despite the criticism he received by leading the national team to a silver finish in the 31st Southeast Asian Games. That performance ended the over three decades of Philippines’ basketball supremacy in the region.
Gilas is grouped with New Zealand, India, and Lebanon in Group D of the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup scheduled from July 12 to 24 at Jakarta, Indonesia.
