Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 22) — The Philippine Consulate General in New York on Friday reported that a Filipina was “verbally assaulted and harassed” at a subway station, another hate-related incident involving the Filipino community.
“In another hate incident reported to [Philippine Consulate General in New York], a 51-year-old Filipina was verbally assaulted and harassed by a homeless woman who also tried to prevent her from boarding her train at the 63rd Drive Subway Station in Rego Park, Queens on Saturday afternoon,” Consul General Elmer Cato tweeted.
This is the 42nd case involving a member of the Filipino community since 2021, the consulate said, as it reiterated the call for Filipinos to be situationally aware whenever they’re outside their homes.
Just less than a week ago, it also reported an 18-year-old Filipino tourist from Cebu was assaulted while walking in New York and suffered facial injuries.
“Kababayan[s] residing in New York and those on temporary visits are reminded to always remain vigilant and to take the necessary precautions, especially when walking in the streets or taking mass transport,” the consulate said in a separate advisory.
On Wednesday, it cited a report from the New York City Police Department showing a 37% increase in major crimes citywide.

Meanwhile, Filipinos in distress are encouraged to call the consulate at +1-917-294-0196 and +1-917- 239-4118 for assistance. They may also call 911 for emergencies, it added.
