EJ Obiena to compete in 4 tournaments in June

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 11) – After defending his Southeast Asian Games title in May, Filipino pole vault star EJ Obiena is gearing up for four international tournaments this month.

Obiena announced on Friday that he will compete in three legs of the 2022 Diamond League season and the Täby Stavhoppsgala in Taby, Sweden on June 28.

The 26-year-old Filipino pole vault pride will see action in the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway on June 16, Meeting De Paris in Paris, France on June 18, and the BAUHAUS-galan tournament in Stockholm, Sweden on June 30.

These tournaments are expected to be used by Obiena as his preparatory meets for the 2022 World Athletics Championships slated next month in Eugene, Oregon.

Obiena was fresh from breaking anew the SEA Games men’s pole vault record, where he cleared 5.46 meters to clinch his second straight gold medal in the biennial regional sporting event.

The Olympian also ruled the European City of Sports event in L’Aquila, Italy on May 31, where he leapt a winning jump of 5.85 meters in front of the picturesque Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio.

Obiena, who is based in Italy for his training camp, also holds the Asian pole vault record at 5.93 meters.
