DOH logs 418 road accidents amid holiday season

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 418 road accidents amid the holiday season.

DOH data on Sunday, Dec. 29, showed 68 new cases were logged from eight pilot sites that the agency is monitoring.

The total of 418 cases – from Dec. 22 to Dec. 29 – is 38 percent higher than last year, the DOH noted.

Of the cases, 70 were under the influence of alcohol while 356 were not using safety accessories. Almost 300 of the incidents involved motorcycles.

The DOH advised motorists to wear a helmet and use seatbelts, to follow the speed limit and road signs, and to ensure sufficient sleep before traveling.

Drivers were further urged to avoid distractions such as use of phones and to not drive after consuming alcohol or when tired.

Those who may need help may call the 911 emergency hotline or 1555 DOH emergency hotline.
