Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 5)— Filipino pole vault sensation EJ Obiena was a spot shy of a podium finish at ISTAF Indoor Athletics Meet in Berlin, Germany on Friday (Saturday Philippine time) — his first tournament for the 2022 season.
Obiena — the defending champion of the meet — managed to clear 5.70 meters but missed on his succeeding attempts.
He settled for fourth place behind Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, USA’s KC Lightfoot, and Germany’s Oleg Zernikel.
Obiena, the current pole vault record holder in Asia, earlier delayed his season debut to recovery from a knee surgery.
He is set to compete in four more indoor competitions this month.
