Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 23) — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed former Supreme Court associate justice Dante Osorio Tinga as acting chairman of the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).

Tinga took his oath before Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin in Malacañang on Thursday, according to Undersecretary Cheloy Garafil, officer-in-charge of the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS). His appointment was dated Dec. 9.

The OPS said Tinga was also named as a member of the government-owned bank’s board of directors.

He served as Supreme Court associate justice from 2003 to 2009 during former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s term.

The 83-year-old lawyer was a dean at his alma mater, University of the East College of Law, from 1989 to 1993 and again in 2017-2018 (interim).

He also served as dean of the College of Law of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines from 2001 until his appointment to the Supreme Court.

Tinga earned his Master of Laws degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1970. He maintained an extensive private practice prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court.

He previously represented the Taguig-Pateros District in the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1998.

Tinga made an unsuccessful bid for a congressional comeback, running as Silbi party-list first nominee in the 2022 national elections.
