Metro Manila, Philippines — The TNT Tropang Giga defended their PBA Governors’ Cup crown after beating Barangay Ginebra, 95-85, in Game 6 of the best-of-seven Season 49 finals on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Reigning Best Import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson carried the Tropang Giga again with 31 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.
With their backs against the wall, Ginebra ended the first half with a 9-0 blitz behind the stellar performance of rookie RJ Abarrientos to hold a precarious 43-42 lead.
Ginebra continued to step on the gas in the third frame, this time led by Justin Brownlee, to maintain an eight-point edge heading into the payoff period.
It was TNT’s turn to make a run in the final quarter with no intentions of playing a do-or-die contest.
RR Pogoy knocked down the dagger three-pointer for the Tropang Giga to push their lead, 94-85, with 53 seconds left in the match.
TNT captured its 10th PBA title overall.
Tropang Giga veteran guard Jayson Castro was named the Finals Most Valuable Player.
