Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 29) — Expected torrential rain from Severe Tropical Storm ‘Paeng’ may cause lahar to flow from Mayon Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned on Friday.
Phivolcs issued a lahar advisory at 7 p.m. for areas around Albay Province’s active volcano after the state weather bureau forecast heavy rains over Bicol region.
“Prolonged and heavy rainfall may generate non-eruption lahars along river/stream channels draining the Mayon edifice,” the advisory stated.
Potential lahars may occur along the Miisi, Binaan, Anoling, Quirangay, Maninila, Masarawag, Muladbucad, Nasisi, Mabinit, Matan-ag, and Basud, Bantayan Channels in Albay Province.
“Mayon lahars can threaten communities along the middle and lower slopes and downstream of these channels with inundation, burial and wash out,” Phivolcs said.
The agency advised the affected communities and local government units to continually monitor the typhoon conditions and take pre-emptive response measures for their safety.
Provinces under Signal No. 2 in Bicol region include Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate and portions of Camarines Sur.
Signal No. 3 is hoisted over Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, the northern portion of Camarines Sur.
‘Paeng’ made landfall in the vicinity of Catanduanes early Saturday morning.
The storm is also seen to traverse the Bicol Peninsula until early Saturday afternoon before crossing Calabarzon and Metro Manila.
