Phivolcs warns of possible lahar flow from Mayon Volcano amid TS Kristine

Metro Manila, Philippines — People near Mayon Volcano in Albay should be on alert as heavy rain triggered by Tropical Storm Kristine could cause dangerous lahar or volcanic mudflow.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said continuous rainfall may cause volcanic ash to flow down Mayon’s slopes.

The mudflow can pose a serious threat to communities near the volcano.

Phivolcs identified the following rivers and channels at risk of lahar:

+ Miisi

+Binaan

+ Anoling

+Quirangay

+Maninila

+ Masarawag

+ Muladbucad

+ Nasisi

+Mabinit

+Matanag

+ Bonga

+Buyuan

+ Basud

+ Bulawan

Rains from Tropical Storm Kristine, which has yet to hit land, have caused flooding and landslides in parts of Bicol.

State weather bureau PAGASA says “Kristine” may intensify into a severe tropical storm before making landfall over Isabela or Aurora tomorrow evening or Thursday early morning.
