
Metro Manila, Philippines – A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Northern Samar on Monday, Aug. 19, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
Phivolcs initially recorded a magnitude 6 tremor at 11:39 a.m., but it was downgraded to magnitude 5.7.
The tectonic quake hit 34 kilometers northwest of Pambujan town. It was 54 kilometers deep.
The following areas encountered the quake:
+ Intensity V – Bobon, Catarman, Laoang, Lavezares, Palapag, Rosario, and San Roque in Northern Samar
+ Intensity IV – Pilar and City of Sorsogon in Sorsogon
+ Intensity III – City of Legazpi and City of Tabaco in Albay; Virac in Catanduanes; Masbate City; Bulusan and Irosin in Sorsogon; Burauen and Javier in Leyte
+ Intensity II – Calubian, Hilongos, Leyte, and Mahaplag in Leyte; Hinunangan and Sogod in Southern Leyte
Damage is not expected, Phivolcs said, adding that aftershocks may occur.
