Metro Manila, Philippines — Two more were added to the death toll from the combined effects of two storms and the southwest monsoon, raising the casualty count to 16, disaster management officials reported on Saturday, July 27.
Of the number, 10 were validated and six still need verification, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in a report.
The NDRRMC reported four people hurt and two others missing.
Heavy rains and flooding triggered by the weather disturbances affected 3.3 million people, including around two million in Central Luzon.
Heavy rains and flooding displaced over 1.1 million people. These were brought by tropical depression Butchoy, typhoon Carina, and the southwest monsoon or habagat.
The report said more than 250,000 people or around 64,000 families sought temporary shelter in evacuation centers.
Carina was out of the country on Thursday, July 25.
Damage
As of Friday afternoon, July 26, the Department of Agriculture reported nearly ₱400 million in agricultural damage.
The rice sector accounted for nearly 90% of the total damage. “Most of the damage and losses on rice are in newly planted, vegetative, and reproductive stages,” the DA explained.
The NDRRMC said infrastructure damage was pegged at ₱1.5 million.
