Magnitude 5.4 tremor hits Zamboanga del Norte town

Metro Manila, Philippines – A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck a town in Zamboanga del Norte on Thursday, Jan. 23.

A Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) bulletin stated that the epicenter was five kilometers off Siocon town at 11:41 a.m.

The agency initially reported a magnitude 6.1 then downgraded on its second bulletin.

It said aftershocks may occur but no expected damage.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was 43 kilometers deep.

Intensity 5 was logged in Siocon, Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City.

The following intensities and areas are:

+ Intensity 4 – Zamboanga City; Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte; Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur; Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay

+ Intensity 3 – Dipolog City and President Manuel A. Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte; Buug and Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay

+ Intensity II – San Jose, Antique; Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental; Molave, Zamboanga del Sur

+ Intensity I – Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental
