Gilas sends off Japeth Aguilar with repeat win over Guam

Metro Manila, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas swept Guam, 95-71, in the first window of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian qualifiers on Monday, Dec. 1, at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.

Justin Brownlee had an all-around outing for Gilas with 20 points, eight assists, and five rebounds.

The victory gave longtime national team stalwart Japeth Aguilar a fitting swan song as he retires from international play after 16 years. He was honored before the match in Ateneo, where he attended college and played in the UAAP for two seasons.

Dwight Ramos chipped in 19 points and seven rebounds, while Kevin Quiambao added 12 points for Gilas.

Jericho Cruz, who suits up for the San Miguel Beermen in the PBA, led Guam again with 27 markers and three dimes.

The Philippines is tied with Australia at the top spot of Group A with an identical 2-0 win-loss record.

Gilas will next battle New Zealand on Feb. 26, 2026 and Australia on March 1, 2026 in back-to-back home games.
