Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 29) — Team USA overpowered Greece, 109-81, at the Mall of Asia Arena on Monday to remain unbeaten, 2-0, and book a ticket to the next phase of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
The Americans continued their dominance in the tournament and made quick work of the World No. 9 Greece, securing the lead early in the first frame, 23-19.
USA further pulled away in the second quarter after igniting a 12-2 run to end the half at 42-27.
The all-star team continued to block off the Greeks’ attempts with Josh Hart’s layup and Paolo Banchero’s one-of-two free throws capping off the third quarter, 79-56.
By the deciding frame, USA broke the game wide open with a 31-point lead before sealing the victory.
Austin Reaves led the team’s balanced attack with 15 points, five rebounds, and six assists. He was also recognized as Player of the Game.
Anthony Edwards and Jalen Brunson added 13 points apiece.
“I think the best word about it is we’re still a new group, we’re still growing, we’re still learning and there’s still a lot of time to get better before just the next,” Brunson said.
Georgios Papagiannis spearheaded Greece with 17 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
USA will next square off with Jordan while Greece will have a chance to nab a second phase slot during their match with New Zealand.
