EJ Obiena soars to third straight SEA Games gold, sets new record

(CNN Philippines, May 8) — EJ Obiena was simply unstoppable in his bid to win three straight gold medals in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games Monday at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh.

The Filipino pole vaulter claimed the gold by clearing 5.65 meters to break the SEA Games record of 5.46 meters he previously set in Vietnam last year.

The event was paused for several minutes due to heavy rainfall in the Cambodian capital.

Obiena first cleared 5.20 meters and 5.40 meters before the competition was temporarily halted. He then proceeded to clear 5.55 meters and 5.65 meters to secure the victory.

It was the Philippines’ 19th gold medal in the 32nd SEA Games.
