Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 18) — The Philippines recorded its “lowest level of terrorism” in 2022, according to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), a report by think tank Institute for Economics and Peace.
According to the index, “the Philippines recorded its lowest level of terrorism since the inception of the GTI. It had 20 attacks and 18 deaths that occurred in 2022, a fall of 68 and 65 percent, respectively when compared to the year prior.” It also recorded 38 injuries and zero hostages.
The Philippines’ ranking in the GTI also improved. It is the 18th most affected by terrorism among 163 countries, up from 17th the previous year.
However, the Philippines remains the second “most impacted country” by terrorism in Southeast Asia. Myanmar topped the region while Indonesia and Thailand ranked third and fourth, respectively.
Afghanistan is the most impacted country by terrorism, followed by Burkina Faso, Somalia, Mali, Syria, Pakistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Myanmar and Niger, according to the GTI.
The National Security Council (NSC) welcomed the results, saying the Philippines’ improved ranking in the GTI is a testament that the government “is on the right track.”
“We welcome with great enthusiasm and optimism the latest results of the Global Terrorism Index released by the Institute for Economic and Peace showing a much improved ranking for the Philippines at 18th place for the year 2022 compared to being in the top 10 countries worst affected by terrorism several years ago,” the NSC said.
According to the GTI, it “provides a comprehensive summary of the key global trends and patterns in terrorism over the last decade.”
