
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 19) — Thirty-three people have been reported dead due to heavy rains since Jan. 2 that caused flooding and landslides in various areas across the country, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Thursday.
In its latest report, the NDRRMC said 18 fatalities were already validated: eight from Zamboanga Peninsula, seven from Eastern Visayas, two from Northern Mindanao, and one from Davao region.
Disaster response officials also reported 12 injured and seven missing people.
Weather systems affected 412,339 families or 1,678,440 individuals, the agency said, with nearly 200,000 residents still living in evacuation centers.
Estimated cost of damage to agriculture has climbed to ₱414.3 million while ₱206.9 million for infrastructure.
As of 6 a.m. Thursday, 243 areas in the country remained flooded due to the combined effects of low pressure areas (LPAs), northeast monsoon, and shear line, according to the NDRRMC.
