Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 12) — Filipino-Italian beauty queen Celeste Cortesi wowed the crowd as she took a Pinoy superhero-inspired national costume to the global stage for Miss Universe 2022.
Walking flawlessly on the runway, Cortesi drew loud cheers on Thursday as she showcased Darna — one of the most iconic Filipino superheroes.
Made by designer Oliver Tolentino, the Philippine bet flaunted Darna’s distinct appearance: the iconic red brassiere with touches of gold, a golden medallion belt with a sparkly loincloth, and red boots.
Cortesi also showed off Darna’s trademark headdress with some metalwork accessories produced by Jerome Navarro.
“Embodying a cultural icon that symbolizes kindness, empathy, and empowerment, Miss Universe Philippines 2022 [Celeste Cortesi] presents Darna at the 71st Miss Universe National Costume Competition,” said Miss Universe Philippines in its Instagram post.
Darna, a well-loved superhero series in the Philippines, tells the story of an ordinary woman who transforms into a warrior with superhuman powers to defend helpless people.
A total of 86 candidates will vie for the crown in this year’s edition of Miss Universe that will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana on Jan. 15 at 9 a.m., Philippine time.
