PH cautiously optimistic on US-Iran peace talks

Metro Manila, Philippines –  The country has expressed cautious optimism on the peace efforts between the United States and Iran, hoping that negotiations will lead to a lasting resolution of the conflict that has disrupted global markets and threatened regional stability.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Manila welcomes the announcement of the US-Iran peace talks, which are expected to be facilitated by Pakistan.

“We hope that the negotiations will lead to the permanent end of the conflict and lasting peace,” the DFA said.

It said the conflict has caused significant loss of lives and damage to civilian and economic infrastructure, while disrupting the global economy.

The peace track follows a truce between the US and Iran, aimed at easing tensions and opening a window for diplomacy after weeks of escalation involving missile exchanges and military strikes.

The ceasefire has raised hopes of stabilizing key global trade routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz — a vital chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes — and easing volatility in global oil prices.

For the Philippines, the situation carries economic implications as the country relies heavily on imported fuel and has already felt the impact of rising oil prices linked to the conflict.

“The Philippines continues to hope that all parties will resolve their differences through earnest dialogue and diplomacy,” the DFA said.

Officials said any sustained de-escalation could help stabilize energy supply and reduce pressure on fuel prices, although uncertainties remain over the durability of the ceasefire and the outcome of the talks.

The government has also been pursuing diplomatic efforts to secure safe passage for Philippine-linked vessels and ensure steady delivery of energy supply, as it works to mitigate the impact of the crisis on the economy.
