50% fare cut on MRT-3, LRT-2 begins March 23 – DOTr

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Department of Transportation on Thursday announced the implementation of a 50% discount for all passengers riding the Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit-2 (LRT-2), effective Monday, March 23.

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the discount is part of the government’s initiatives to ease the financial burden on daily commuters.

“Ginagawa ng pamahalaan ang lahat para maibsan ang paghihirap ng mga Pilipino sa gitna ng gulo sa Middle East,” said Lopez.

This follows President Bongbong Marcos’ directive on Tuesday, wherein he cited the need to lower railway fares.

“Pagagaanin natin ang araw-araw na biyahe. Sa MRT at LRT ay magdidiskwento po tayo sa pamasahe. Gagawin natin ang lahat para manatiling maayos at tuloy-tuloy ang biyahe ng bawat Pilipino,” said Marcos.

The initial 50% discount will apply to white beep card holders, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and students, while regular passengers with blue beep cards will be granted the discount automatically.

Passengers without beep cards may avail themselves of single-journey tickets to receive the discount.

MRT-3 covers the route from North Avenue to Taft Avenue, while LRT-2 runs from Recto Station to Antipolo Station.

The Department of Transportation said it will coordinate with LRT-1 management to discuss possible discount offerings for passengers traveling on the line.
