What to expect in aid for NCR tricycle drivers

Metro Manila, Philippines – Around 139,000 tricycle drivers in Metro Manila will first receive the ₱5,000 cash assistance beginning Tuesday, March 17, as pump prices soar.

Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian said the government has identified 30 sites in the region for the payout beginning 6 a.m.

“Mabilisan ‘yon. Walang naman talagang convergence ng tao supposedly…dahil gusto rin natin makapasada sila,” Gatchalian said in a briefing on Monday, March 16, stressing that “anti-epal” measures will be followed.

[Translation: It will be a quick payout. No convergence of people, supposedly, as we want them to work and ply their routes.]

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the fund comes from the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), so drivers would directly receive the payout.

Lopez said the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board only has a list of transport operators, so the DSWD list will also help in the distribution of fuel subsidies, possibly next week.

Gatchalian said beneficiaries should coordinate with local government units on the payout schedule.

“Hindi namin hinihikayat na ang lahat ay magtungo nang sabay-sabay kasi working day tomorrow,” the Cabinet official said. “At gusto natin hindi mahirapan ang riding public, ayaw natin maka-cause ng commotion.”

[Translation: We don’t encourage all drivers to go to the payout sites, especially since it is a working day tomorrow. We don’t want to hassle our riding public and cause a commotion.]

Tricycle drivers should show their driver’s license and a photocopy. Help desks will be set up to assist beneficiaries.
