Metro Manila, Philippines – The De La Salle University Lady Spikers completed a first round sweep after taking down the National University Lady Bulldogs, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday, March 15, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
This was the Lady Spikers’ first victory against the Lady Bulldogs since Season 86, suffering five straight losses in their matchups.
Team captain Shevana Laput led La Salle with 19 points with eight excellent digs, while Angel Canino added 14 points for the Taft-based squad.
As the Lady Spikers were threatening to pull away with a 15-3 lead in the fourth set, NU unleashed a 13-3 rally to cut the deficit to two points before La Salle proved it had the firepower to seal the win.
Amie Provido contributed 12 points, while rookie middle blocker Vida Caringal made the most of her first start with nine points for the Lady Spikers.
Despite not playing in the opening set, Sam Cantada still paved the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points on 10 attacks, two blocks, and an ace.
La Salle finished the first round with a perfect 7-0 win-loss record, with NU trailing at second place with a 5-2 slate.
