Metro Manila, Philippines – The remains of Mary Ann de Vera, the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) killed in Israel at the height of the Middle East conflict, were repatriated to the country on Saturday, March 14.

Airspace closures hampered repatriation efforts.

Bernie Lavarias, also an OFW in Israel, accompanied his wife’s body. They were greeted by officials from the Department of Migrant Workers, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Israel’s ambassador to the Philippines Dana Kursh, and other representatives from Congress.

Lavarias earlier met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who conveyed condolences and said that he will receive immediate financial aid through Israel’s compensation program for war victims and a monthly stipend through the state’s national insurance system.

The Philippine government also assured De Vera’s family of assistance.

De Vera assisted her elderly ward to a bomb shelter when she was struck by bomb shrapnel.

Sixteen OFWs from Israel have returned to the country on Wednesday, March 11, after crossing to Egypt and taking a flight from Oman.

Philippine officials said they have assisted in transporting nearly 70 Filipinos, including 25 workers, out of Israel.
