Metro Manila, Philippines – The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) on Tuesday announced an increase in electricity rates of P0.6427 per kWh for the month of March.
Meralco cited higher transmission and generation charges as among the primary factors driving the overall rate increase.
For a typical Filipino household consuming 200 kWh per month, this translates to about P129 more on their electricity bill.
In an advisory, Meralco said the 70% increase in ancillary service charges incurred by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines from the reserve market caused the higher transmission charge.
The generation charge also rose from P7.2209 per kWh to P7.8607 per kWh.
The price adjustment also reflects the P0.01 per kWh new uniform national lifeline subsidy rate, following a directive from the Energy Regulatory Commission.
Middle East conflict and approaching dry season
Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga advised Filipinos to adopt energy-saving practices amid the Middle East conflict and the approaching dry season.
“We are entering a period when demand for electricity traditionally peaks, and external factors are adding pressure to energy costs,” said Zaldarriaga.
“By embracing energy efficiency, consumers can have better control over their electricity bills and, at the same time, help mitigate the impact of external factors on electricity costs,” he added.
