Marcos unveils new EDSA busway footbridge replacing ‘Mt. Kamuning’

Metro Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand  Marcos Jr.  inspected on Thursday, March 5, a newly built pedestrian bridge connected to the EDSA Busway Kamuning Station, replacing the steep overpass long dubbed by commuters as “Mt. Kamuning.”

Marcos, accompanied by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and their son William Vincent “Vinny,” first climbed the old nine-meter footbridge to experience the difficult ascent of commuters crossing EDSA. The visit was nine months after the president first climbed the controversial structure in June 2025.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez and Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon also joined the inspection.

The group then toured the new footbridge to compare the structures. Marcos said the previous bridge had design issues, including noticeable movement when vehicles passed underneath.

“The old one is not very good at all. You could even feel the steps shaking when vehicles passed under it. The new footbridge is way better,” Marcos told reporters.

The replacement structure was designed to make crossing easier and more accessible for commuters using the EDSA Busway and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

Marcos said the new bridge features lower stairways and an elevator for commuters who cannot use the stairs. Wheelchair lifts and wheelchairs are also available to assist persons with disabilities.

“So now, the stairs that commuters have to climb are lower, and there is already an elevator for those who cannot use the stairs. We also installed a wheelchair lift for people using wheelchairs, and we even provided wheelchairs to make the commuting experience easier,” he said.

The president said the improvement shows that commuter facilities can be upgraded with determination from government agencies.

“So far, I’m happy to see that we can actually make a better structure… It is not that difficult, as long as we are determined to improve the commuting experience of Filipinos,” Marcos said.

He added that the old structure will eventually be dismantled.

“Mt. Kamuning will no longer be there. We will remove Mt. Kamuning so this new structure will be used instead,” he said.

The Kamuning Footbridge and Busway Station project cost P87.3 million — P54.7 million for the footbridge and P32.6 million for the busway station.

The project is expected to benefit more than 750,000 commuters who use the MRT-3 and EDSA Busway daily.

“With this, we can ease the commuters burden even a little,” Marcos said.
