Metro Manila, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday said its role in securing the return of former lawmaker Zaldy Co is part of the whole-of-government approach in coordination with the International Criminal Police Organization or Interpol.
The statement clarified the remarks of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla that the matter was “up to the DFA.”
The DFA said arresting and bringing back the former lawmaker to the country requires coordinated law enforcement and judicial processes, with Interpol.
“Secretary Remulla’s view that the matter rests solely ‘up to the DFA’ does not fully capture this whole-of-government approach,” the DFA said in a statement, explaining that joint action among various government agencies is necessary.
The DFA assured the public of its commitment to uphold the law and ensure due process for all Filipino nationals facing legal accountability.
“The DFA stands ready to provide diplomatic assistance within its mandate and in line with established protocols,” the statement added.
