Metro Manila, Philippines – Prized recruit Sam Cantada shined for National University (NU) as the Lady Bulldogs opened their three-peat bid with a win over the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses, 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 26-24, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City.
Cantada, the Season 87 girls’ volleyball Most Valuable Player, scored seven of the Lady Bulldogs’ last 10 points in the fourth set. She finished with 21 points in the match.
The Golden Tigresses were on the brink of forcing a fifth set after holding a 23-19 edge in the fourth set, but the rookie was unstoppable in her seniors debut, firing three service aces to lead the NU rally.
It was a strong statement victory for the Lady Bulldogs in the post-Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon-era under new head coach Regine Diego.
Vange Alinsug added 18 points, while Arah Panique contributed 15 points for NU.
Shaira Jardio was spectacular on the defensive end for the Lady Bulldogs with 20 excellent receptions and 14 excellent digs.
Angge Poyos paced UST with 18 markers on 15 attacks and three blocks.
NU will next tackle the Adamson University Lady Falcons on Feb. 18 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.
Meanwhile, the Golden Tigresses will have a one-week break before facing the dangerous De La Salle University Lady Spikers on Feb. 22 at the MOA Arena.
