PBA approves Calvin Abueva trade to Converge

Metro Manila, Philippines – It’s official: “The Beast” is joining the Converge FiberXers in the PBA.

The FiberXers have acquired the 38-year-old Calvin Abueva from Titan Ultra in exchange for Rey Suerte, King Caralipio, and Mark Omega.

The PBA Commissioner’s Office approved the deal on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Abueva is coming off a renaissance of a campaign with Titan Ultra in the Season 50 Philippine Cup, averaging a league-best 23.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. He was one of the contenders for the Best Player of the Conference (BPC), which San Miguel’s June Mar Fajardo eventually captured.

Abueva will be reuniting with his longtime patron Delta Pineda, the current head coach of Converge.

Abueva will bolster the FiberXers’ frontcourt duo of Justine Baltazar and Justin Arana, and Juan Gomez de Liaño who was the BPC runner-up in the All-Filipino conference.

Converge booked a Philippine Cup quarterfinals spot armed with a win-once bonus but lost to Barangay Ginebra twice.

Meanwhile, Suerte – drafted second overall by Blackwater in the 2019 Gilas Draft – will be suiting up for his third squad in the PBA, while Caralipio and Omega will be running the hardcourt alongside fellow former Letran players Fran Yu, Jeo Ambohot, Jerrick Balanza, Pao Javillonar, Ato Ular, and Kobe Monje in Titan Ultra.
