Metro Manila, Philippines – Tropical Storm Ada (international name: Nokaen) was last seen slowly moving away from Catanduanes, but rains associated with the tropical cyclone will still be experienced on Sunday, Jan. 18.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, state weather bureau PAGASA said Signal No. 2 remained hoisted over Catanduanes and the eastern portion of Camarines Sur.

“Ada” maintained its strength, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

In a briefing, PAGASA weather specialist Grace Castañeda said strong rains brought by “Ada” are already offshore.

“Meron pa ring scattered na pag-ulan, pagkidlat, at pagkulog na mararanasan mostly dito sa eastern section ng southern Luzon,” Castañeda said.

[Translation: There will still be scattered rains and thunderstorms mostly in the eastern section of southern Luzon.]

“Expect natin until today mararamdaman pa rin ‘yong direct effect ng Bagyong Ada in terms ng pag-ulan, but less na ‘yong pag-ulan na ito kumpara sa mga naranasan natin kahapon mostly dito sa area ng southern Luzon at ilang areas pa ng Visayas,” she said.

[Translation: The public must expect the direct effects of Tropical Storm Ada in terms of rainfall, but lesser than what was experienced yesterday in southern Luzon and some areas in Visayas.]

The northeast monsoon or amihan and the periphery of “Ada” will bring strong to gale-force gusts over Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Ilocos Norte, Aurora, Quezon, Bicol Region, Northern Samar, Samar, and Eastern Samar.

Signal No. 1 is up in the following areas:

Luzon – The southern portion of Quezon including Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, the rest of Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, and Ticao and Burias Islands

Visayas – Northern Samar

PAGASA said “Ada” is forecast to move generally northeastward until Monday, Jan. 19, before following a looping track over the sea east of Luzon.

“Ada” is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by Tuesday then into a low pressure area by Thursday due to the surge of amihan.
