Death toll in Cebu landfill collapse rises to 22

Metro Manila, Philippines — The death toll from the landfill collapse in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City is now at 22, authorities said on Thursday, Jan. 15.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Central Visayas, the figure was recorded as of 12 p.m. Search, rescue, and retrieval operations remain for 14 others still reported missing.

A large portion of the Binaliw landfill operated by Prime Waste Solutions collapsed on Jan. 8 and trapped a number of workers under tons of waste and debris.

In response, Cebu City councilors approved a resolution declaring a state of calamity following the garbage landslide.

Meanwhile, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas has issued a cease-and-desist order against the private operator of the Binaliw landfill.
