Landslide in Binaliw, Cebu landfill kills one, injures dozen, 38 still missing

Metro Manila, Philippines – A landslide in a landfill in Binaliw town in Cebu killed one person, injured at least a dozen others, and left 38 others missing, local officials said on Friday, Jan. 9.

A massive section of the Binaliw landfill under the waste management operation of Prime Waste Solutions collapsed late Thursday, Jan. 8, trapping a number of workers in the rubble.

“Ang focus natin doon ay rescue,” Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said in a press briefing at the site.

Archival said 10-hour rescue operations for the 38 missing people are ongoing until Jan. 11. After this, the search for the remaining missing persons will shift to 24 hours.

The mayor said he has already met with Prime Waste, city council members, the Philippine National Police, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Archival said he reached out to DENR for help to develop at least 10 more hectares for the landfill.

He said Prime Waste is ready to extend aid to the government and support the affected families.
