PH shocks Indonesia to reach SEA Games men’s football semis

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Philippines stunned reigning champion Indonesia, 1-0, to boost its men’s football medal chances in the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Monday, Dec. 8, at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Otu Banatao scored the lone goal in the match through a header just before the halftime break.

The Philippines swept its assignments following a prior 2-0 win over Myanmar in the group stage to earn an outright berth in the semifinals with an opportunity for a podium finish.

The last time the Philippines advanced to the SEA Games semis was in 1991 when teams were still allowed to field in senior players.

The Philippines has yet to win a medal in SEA Games men’s football.

The Philippines will have a week-long break before plunging to action as it shoots for a spot in the gold medal match against an opponent yet to be determined on Dec. 15.
