Metro Manila, Philippines – Former Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson has resigned from the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) as the flood control investigation posed effects to his health and security.
ICI chairperson Andres Reyes on Wednesday, Dec. 3, confirmed Singson’s resignation as commissioner, which will take effect on Dec. 15 but could be extended to Dec. 31.
In a news conference, Reyes told reporters that 77-year-old Singson cited health and security reasons “because he’s not used to this kind of life” for his resignation.
“He mentioned the very intense and stressful ICI work has taken a toll on his aging body,” Reyes said.
The ICI is waiting for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s acceptance of Singson’s resignation, and the recommendation of who will replace him as commissioner.
“We can continue investigative work on table basis, not hearing basis,” the ICI chairperson said of the possible effect of losing a commissioner.
Singson was the second member of the investigating body to step down from the investigating body, which was created in September.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong earlier resigned as special adviser and was replaced by former PNP chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr.
In a television interview in August, Singson said he received “feelers” from Marcos to lead the embattled Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) amid the flood control corruption scandal.
He was then announced as part of the three-member independent panel.
Singson led the DPWH during the Aquino administration.
