
Metro Manila, Philippines – The Philippines, ranked 88th in the world, started their 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship campaign with a huge upset win over defending African champion and world No. 21 Egypt, 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Team captain Bryan Bagunas led Alas Men with 25 points on 23 attacks and two blocks.
This is a historic moment for the Philippines as the country marks its first victory on the grandest stage of volleyball.
Leo Ordiales contributed 21 points, while Marck Espejo added 13 points including the game-clinching block in the fourth set for Alas Men.
Alas Men now share an identical 1-1 win-loss record with Tunisia, Iran, and Egypt in Pool A of the global tournament.
