PH still backs Ukraine against Russian invasion

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Philippines is standing firm in its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and continues to condemn Russia’s invasion, reaffirming its position despite a perceived shift in the United States’ stance on the three-year war.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo underscored Manila’s commitment to Ukraine, emphasizing that the country’s position remains unchanged.

“We maintained our (stand), on the last resolution. The US resolution was basically calling for peace. So there’s nothing inconsistent with that. So that was consistent with the overall Ukraine approach,” Manalo said in an interview with NewsWatch Plus.

“But as far as we’re concerned, we still support the basic fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter. And on that basis, we supported Ukraine in the conflict,” he added.

The Philippines recently voted in favor of a European-backed UN General Assembly resolution expressing concern over Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The resolution reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity while calling for a peaceful resolution in line with the UN Charter.

Meanwhile, a Reuters report said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House resulted in a heated exchange on Friday, with both leaders engaging in a shouting match before the global media over the war in Russia.
