Metro Manila, Philippines — A training ship anchored in Navotas City caught fire after an allision with a cargo vessel as Tropical Storm Enteng caused rough waters on Monday, Sept. 2.
In an incident report, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said M/V Kamilla was anchored in the vicinity waters of Navotas Anchorage Area when it was hit by LCT GT Express.
The LCT GT Express was also anchored in the area but was swept away by strong current to hit the training ship.
The coast guard failed to deploy a floating asset to rescue the crew as Metro Manila encountered slightly the effects of “Enteng.”
Fire onboard MV Kamilla was reported minutes past 9 a.m. By 10:50 a.m., the vessel’s owner told the PCG that the crew abandoned the ship.
“Eight minutes later, MTUG Phil Leyte reported they rescued 17 of the 18 crew and brought them to the CGSS Navotas at around 11:15AM,” the PCG said. “BFP Navotas Medical Team provided medical assistance to the rescued individuals.”
“The last crew was rescued at Barangay Sipac-Almacen,” it added. “He is now at the Navotas City Hospital for medical treatment.”
“Enteng” has brought heavy rains to many areas in Luzon and the Visayas since Sunday.
