Metro Manila, Philippines – The “Gil Tulog” street signs in the Makati Central Business District, which replaced the Gil Puyat Avenue signs for an advertising campaign, have been taken down.
Makati Mayor Abby Binay slammed the move on Friday, July 26, noting that the permit request did not reach her office.
“Kung dumaan sa akin yan, rejected yan agad,” Binay said in a statement.
[Translation: If that went through me, it would have been rejected.]
“The city officials who issued the permit should have exercised prudence. They should have been more thorough,” she added.
Binay said replacing the street signs could sow confusion among motorists and commuters.
The memory of former Senate President Gil Puyat and his family should have also been respected by the officials, the mayor said.
Binay extended her apologies to the public and to the Puyat family. -Daniza Fernandez
