14 deaths due to ‘habagat,’ two storms — NDRRMC

In Batangas, authorities of Agoncillo town recover four bodies who died due to a landslide as the southwest monsoon and super typhoon Carina drenched many parts of the country.

Metro Manila, Philippines — Heavy rains in the past days from two storms and the southwest monsoon have resulted in 14 deaths, disaster management officials said on Thursday, July 25.

In a recent report, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said eight deaths were validated while the remaining six (five from Calabarzon and one in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) were up for verification.

Four deaths were reported in Agoncillo, Batangas on Wednesday from landslides triggered by continuous rains.

According to the NDRRMC report, two people were hurt while two remain missing.

The agency said non-stop rains and flooding affected more than 245,000 families or around 1.1 million Filipinos in nearly 1,000 barangays.

Around 12,000 families sought shelter in evacuation centers, while nearly 117,000 others are temporarily outside evacuation centers.

At their peak, tropical depression Butchoy and super typhoon Carina enhanced the southwest monsoon, or habagat, dumping rains in a large section of the country.

Local officials in the National Capital Region and some areas in Calabarzon were among those who declared a state of calamity.

Heavy rains and flooding damaged P9.7 million worth of agriculture production.

As of 8 a.m. on Thursday, nearly 300 areas remained flooded, with 49 bridges impassable. — Jelo Ritzhie Mantaring
