Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Soap brand Lifebuoy is teaching proper handwashing to kids in a fun way they can understand.
Unilever, the parent company of Lifebuoy, recently partnered with Pasig City and the Department of Education for the sustainability program WASH, which stands for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.
In Barangay Pinagbuhatan — Pasig City’s largest barangay — students, parents, and teachers attending the handwashing program all received hygiene kits with Lifebuoy soaps. They were then taught five key steps to effective handwashing:
1. Rubbing of palms together or “Friendship”
2. Interlacing of fingers to clean between them thoroughly or “Fighting”
3. Washing of knuckles or “Crocodile”
4. Washing around the thumbs or “Butterfly”
5. Washing the tips of fingers or “Turn the Key”

Throughout the year, Lifebuoy has been bringing its advocacy program to communities through barangay caravans. The hygiene soap brand also provides educational materials to boost awareness and understanding of the importance of handwashing in preventing diseases and protecting lives.
“Lifebuoy’s partnership with schools underscores our unwavering commitment to make hygiene accessible for every Filipino,” shared Lifebuoy Business Performance Manager Anthony Chiang.
“Together, we empower the young generation with the right tools and knowledge to ensure a healthier life — one clean hand at a time,” he added.
This initiative is also aligned with Goal 6 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which recognizes handwashing with soap as crucial to better health. Hands are the principal carriers of disease-causing germs and it’s estimated that if handwashing with soap is widely practiced, approximately 230,000 deaths could be averted every year.

Lifebuoy remains committed to promoting healthy handwashing habits across the globe, as part of their mission to make hand hygiene readily accessible and understood by all.
Lifebuoy is one of Unilever’s oldest brands, and has championed a message of health through hygiene for more than a century. Unilever, through its brands, is well-placed to take upon an active role in social causes relating to health resilience.
