Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 8) — Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy took on the challenge to host the 81st annual Golden Globes with little time to prepare. On the day of the much-awaited event on Monday, some of his jokes directed towards women and a film on womanhood failed to land with the audience in Hollywood and online.
Jo Koy started the ceremony with his monologue on the nominated films. He went on to compare the two flicks with the highest nominations: “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
Both films competed for the cinematic box office achievement award. The comedian described \”Barbie\” as a movie on \”plastic doll with big boobies\” — as the camera panned to its director Greta Gerwig.
On social media, Jo Koy was slammed for the misogynistic joke.
“The awkward silence at Jo Koy’s Barbie jokes… He told smart jokes about the other nominees and all he had about Barbie was “big boobs,” a user on X wrote.
“Cut to Greta Gerwig looking utterly disheartened at the way the movie she lovingly and tirelessly crafted is being blithely discussed. Do better, #GoldenGlobes,” another said.
He also cracked a joke on Taylor Swift and her appearances during the matches of her beau, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” he said.
Swift looked annoyed when the camera panned to her while sipping her drink. Jo Koy quickly apologized, \”Sorry about that.\”
